The gender perspective and the security perception of tourist destinations: the case of Girona

Authors

Abstract

Security is a fundamental aspect when one visits a destination and interacts with it. Assessing the perceived security is helpful for understanding visitors’ perceptions and understand up to which extent they feel their experience in the city is safe, and thus, better.

This research examines the perceived security in an urban destination from a gender perspective approach and considering the origin of participants. This research is based on quantitative techniques, particularly, a Likert scale created to assess the perceived security of this city. The main results point out that there are slight differences related to perceived security depending on gender. Nevertheless, the identified differences for each gender do not represent a huge change between genders. As a conclusion, in the study there are possible solutions and ways of improving the perception of safety of the destination to help them perceive it is an even safer place, and therefore, help visitors and tourists make the most of their visit.
