The media representation of Cuban cultural creation: the case of OnCuba

Authors

Abstract

This research proposes an approach to the representation of Cuban cultural creation carried out by the American publication OnCuba. For this, a predominantly qualitative methodology is used and finds its theoretical reference in media representation. The objective of this study is to characterize the representation of Cuban cultural creation made from the previously mentioned medium in the period between December 2014 and March 2016, taking into account the transcendental fact that marks the beginning: the reestablishment of relations relations between Cuba and the United States and subsequent events until the event that closes the period: President Barack Obama's visit to Cuba. The selection of the unit of analysis responds, among other reasons, to the peculiarity that of the non-institutional media that have Cuba at the center of their agendas, it is the only one accredited as such before the Press Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (Minrex). This approach constitutes an exploratory study, since in its realization no precedents were found on the present topic. The results evidenced the existence of a broad, inclusive and diverse representation of Cuban cultural creation, unusual in traditional media.
