Abstract

Many times, not to say always, there is talk of the Tetouan War as the result of an attack by the Kabila de Anyera in August 1859 on a Spanish border post established in the outskirts of the city of Ceuta, for which the Kingdom of Spain, in an attempt to restore his "stained" honor, he undertook that contest to punish those "savages" who dared to attack the soldiers of Her Majesty Isabel II. But the truth is that this discourse is a romantic discourse, adopted both by Spanish intellectuals such as Pedro Antonio de Alarcón with his work Diary of a witness to the war in Africa, and Gaspar Núñez de Arce with his Journalistic Chronicles of the war in Africa. (1859-1860), as later by writers such as Benito Pérez Galdós with his Aita Tettauen among others, as well as by the different media of the time to encourage the patriotic feeling of the people in order to push them to enlist in the ranks of that an army that will go to North Africa to "easily" defeat this threat that lives on the other side of the border with Ceuta. In this article we will try to make it clear that the reasons for said contest were very different by analyzing the speech of said newspaper.
