Abstract

This article provides a typological study of the translation of football terms between Spanish and Chinese in written press. According to the selected corpus, this monograph focuses on expressions and locutions (specific terms, collocations, set-phrases) that are typical and idiosyncratic in journalistic language and are used in the chronicles of this sport. The translation between Chinese and Spanish of these terminological units presents certain difficulties in comparison with the translation of the standard language. What is pursued is a contrastive study of the football terminology used by Chinese and Spanish sports journalists or commentators. The methodology of this paper is based on an empirical research. The author provides a stochastic research line through a corpus of 2782 words in Spanish and 5760 characters in Chinese based on texts extracted from written press in Spanish and Chinese. Several representative cases of different linguistic and extra-linguistic categories are chosen. Through this work, the importance of the Chinese/Spanish football terminology is defended to elaborate a quality- satisfying translation respect to the journalistic articles on football.
