The current status of open access

Abstract

A few years ago, open access seemed like a minority option and could not be established as an alternative to disseminate research results and allow researchers to advance their academic career. The strong support of research funding institutions has been essential for open access to be a viable alternative for publishing today and it also seems to be consolidating as the option for the future. However, there are still some doubts among researchers to follow the policies of the funders. Furthermore, while we are discussing the most appropriate models to make this system economically sustainable, new publishing platforms are appearing that are shaking up the landscape of scientific communication. In this article we will review the current state of open access and propose some scenarios for the future.
